MOSCOW, March 12, 2020 - At the moment when dozens of competitions are being cancelled or adjourned the 2020 Candidates Tournament in Yekaterinburg will go ahead as planned on the 16th of March.
The Federation of Sport Journalists of Russia and the newspaper “Rossiyskaya Gazeta” invited the FIDE President Arkadiy Dvorkovitch and many time chess world champion to a press conference in the vast premises of “RG”.
More then 70 sport journalists attended and were happy to hear the speech of FIDE President in which he confirmed that the eight-player chess double round-robin tournament will still take place in the city of Yekaterinburg. The organizers headed by the president of the local regional chess federation Mr.Andrey Simanovskiy worked out the plan supported by FIDE. Two chess players from China, Wang Hao and Ding Liren had already spent two weeks in isolation – one in the Moscow region and another in Japan.
All participants will stay in a five star hotel, Hayatt, and will play in a closed area of this hotel. An important security measure has been taken: there’ll be no spectators.
Anatolit Karpov stressed the fact that the organizers from the FIDE and from Yekaterinburg did their best to provide the highest level of living for the eight contenders and their teams. “And if anybody of the players may be upset by something this something may only be the level of his personal performance.
Meanwhile the mayor of Moscow has ordered that all matches of the Premier Football League and the play-offs of the Continental Hockey League may be attended only by 5000 spectators – an extremely low level for Russia and especially for the capital of the country.
