SEOUL, March 9, 2016 – The PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG) has celebrated its ‘2nd Paralympic Day’ at the Uiam Ice Rink in Chuncheon, capital city of Gangwon Province on March 9th, 2016.
‘Paralympic Day’ is part of PyeongChang’s promotions to enhance the awareness and perception of para-sports in Korea. POCOG President Yang-Ho Cho, Governor of Gangwon Province CHOI Moon-soon, Korean Paralympic Committee (KPC) President KIM Sung-il, International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Governing Board member NA Kyung-won, PyeongChang 2018 Ambassador KIM Yuna, and other officials from the sports industry attended the event to celebrate 2-years-to-go to the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games.
During the event, Korea’s ice sledge hockey Star JUNG Seung-hwan was appointed as an Honorary Ambassador for PyeongChang 2018. JUNG played a key role for his team this past season, named Best Forward of the 2015 World Championships B-Pool topping all athletes with 13 goals, 9 assists and 22 points and leading the promotion of Team Korea back to A-Pool.
Following the official ceremony, the atmosphere heated up with the Korea National Team’s ice sledge hockey exhibition match. Team Korea is currently ranked 6th in the World Ranking table. Participants were also given the opportunity to experience first-hand the sport of wheelchair curling and ice sledge hockey.
POCOG President Yang-Ho Cho said, “POCOG is committed to raising national interest and understanding of para sports and the Paralympic Games through diverse promotional activities like today’s Paralympic Day event, to host a successful Paralympic Games at PyeongChang in 2018.”
