Slovenian ice hockey player Ziga Jeglic has been sent home from PyeongChang 2018 after he tested positive for the banned substance fenoterol, the Court of Arbitration for Sports’ anti-doping division [ADD] announced on Tuesday.
The 29-year-old agreed to leave Pyeongchang following his positive test. Jeglic is the third athlete to fail a drugs test during the Games. Japanese ice skater Kei Saito and Russian curler Alexander Krushelnitsky were both banned for the remainder of the Games after testing positive.
Fenoterol is used to open up the airways to the lungs to aid with performance endurance, and CAS’ADD confirmed that Jeglic’s failed test had taken place in competition.
"The athlete accepted an anti-doping rule violation and, as a consequence, the athlete is suspended from competing in the remainder of the Olympic Winter Games Pyeongchang 2018,” read a CAS ADD statement read.
Jeglic, who plays for Russian side Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod in the Kontinental Hockey League, did not feature in Slovenia’s 2-1 defeat against Norway on Tuesday.
