“AIPS meets Aleksander Čeferin” headlines opening day of 84th AIPS Congress in Rome


LAUSANNE, September 27, 2022 – A special session titled “AIPS meets Aleksander Čeferin” will open the 84th AIPS Congress, which is an elective congress, on October 3, 2022. The UEFA President has confirmed his attendance for this in depth one-hour conversation to be morderated by AIPS President Gianni Merlo at the charming TH – Carpegna Palace Hotel in Rome, Italy. The session is scheduled to start at 3pm. Before then, the AIPS Executive Committee meeting will hold in the morning, starting at 9:30.
ČEFERIN Born in the capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, on 13 October 1967, Čeferin, a lawyer and football administrator, has served as president of European football’s governing body, since his election on September 14, 2016. Before then he was the president of the Football Association of Slovenia for five years. The Ljubljana University graduate developed a special interest in representing professional athletes and sports clubs while working for his family’s law firm. His second term as the seventh UEFA president began on February 9, 2019 after he was re-elected by acclamation for a new four-year term in Rome.
YOUNG REPORTERS The opening day of the AIPS Congress will also focus on the AIPS Young Reporters Programme, one of the associations’ key initiatives that has existed since 2011 and has left significant footprints in the lives of over 200 young journalists from around the world. This segment will feature presentations from Vladyslav Dunaienko, who will share the story of how his life changed from being an AIPS Young Reporter last November in Lausanne to fighting as a soldier on Ukraine’s front lines, and Ritah Aliguma, who was part of the inaugural Young Reporters Programme in Shenzhen, sharing how her Aliguma Foundation is using sports to transform the lives of kids in the slums of Uganda.
ELECTIVE CONGRESS Over three days, delegates, observers and guests representing national sports journalists associations from all corners of the world will converge to discuss global issues affecting sports and sports journalism, especially post-Covid, make important decisions regarding the present and future of the association, as well as elect leaders to the Executive Committee of AIPS for a new four-year term. The election will be held on Day 3 of the Congress, 5 October - candidates were announced on 5 July.
PANELS AND PRESENTATIONS Day 2 of the Congress is packed with panel discussions on the future of sports journalism and presentations by AIPS partners, who will share the latest developments regarding their organisations, especially as they concern media operations.
This will be the first in-person gathering of all the national associations since the last Congress which took place in Budapest in February 2020, after which a nightmarish COVID-19 pandemic swept across the world and brought it to a standstill.
