DAKAR, December 18, 2018 – The Senegalese National Sport Press Association (ANPS) has honoured the best Senegalese athletes of the year 2018 during its annual Gala held on 15 December at the Daniel Sorano National Theatre in Dakar.
Liverpool FC striker Sadio Mané clinched the “Ballon d’Or Senegal” (BOS) - which is the most prestigious award given to the country’s best expatriate footballer - for the fifth time in a row ahead Napoli’s central defender Kalidou Koulibaly, who had to settle for second place based on the votes by sport journalists.
Mané who could not be present at the Gala sent a video in which he expressed his satisfaction and gratitude towards the Senegalese sports press.
ANPS awarded the title of Best Athlete of the Year to the Women's National Basketball Team as a reward for their performance at the 2018 World Cup where they advanced to the Round of 16 stage of the competition. The group succeeds their captain, Astou Traoré, who was voted Best Athlete of the Year in 2017.
At the local level, Senegalese sports journalists have chosen Amadou Dia Ndiaye of Generation foot – a Senegalese Premier League club – as the best player and François Gomis as the best wrestler in traditional wrestling.
The best of the year in the wrestling category, however, went to Eumeu Sène, who came personally to receive his trophy. In an atmosphere worthy of wrestling ceremonies, provided by the committee of supporters, Séne, draped in a large traditional white boubou performed a few dance steps to show his joy. He is currently the best wrestler in the heavyweight category and the “King of the Arena”.
The 14th edition of the ANPS Gala also served as a moment of integration and fraternity with the National Sport Press Associations of neighbouring countries also represented. As honorary guests of ANPS president Abdoulaye Thiam, the president of the Sport Journalist Association of Gambia (SJAG) Musa Sise and president of Mali National Sport Press Association Omar Baba Traoré made the trip to Dakar to attend the Gala.
A football match was organized between the ANPS team and the SJAG team, which ended with the Gambians winning 1-0. It was sweet revenge for the SJAG team for the defeat they suffered at the hands of ANPS in Banjul last April during the SJAG Gala.
The ANPS paid tribute to the elders including Abdoulaye Seye Morreau, a former president of FIBA. Morreau was made godfather of the Gala.
