Moldovan Sports Press Association celebrates 25th anniversary

CHISINAU, December 19, 2018 - Representatives of the Moldovan sports press gathered to celebrate the 25th anniversary of APSM (Asociatia Presei Sportive din Republica Moldova). The event coincided with the traditional end-of-the-year Gala, held at Mi Piace, one of the finest banquet halls of the Moldovan capital.
AIPS Europe President and AIPS Vice-President Charles Camenzuli, who arrived to Chisinau for an official visit, became the guest of honor of the event. 'It is a great pleasure for me to be with Moldovan sports journalists on such a memorable date,” said Camenzuli. “I have been following the progress of Moldovan sports press since the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. I must say that I am extremely pleased with the progress and development APSM has achieved over the years.”
The AIPS Europe President awarded the Moldovan Association with a commemorative plaque, which was received by President Eduard Ciobanu. In turn, President Ciobanu awarded Charles Camenzuli with the title of Honorary Member of the Sports Press Association of Moldova.
During the ceremony, a big group of journalists received special diplomas from the Moldovan Government, President of the country and the Association. The awards recognized their input into development and promotion of sport in the country.
The evening continued with the Best of 2018 awards. Greco-roman wrestler Victor Ciobanu, silver medalist of this year's World Championships in Budapest, was crowned the Best Athlete of 2018. His coach Mihail Cucul was named the Coach of the Year. Aaron Cook, European silver-medalist in taekwondo came in second, while Dan Olaru, who took silver at the Europeans in archery was named third.
Dorin Damir, President of the Fighting and Entertainment Association (FEA) of Moldova was named the Sports Personality of the Year in recognition of his contributions in development of sport in Moldova. Professor Veaceslav Manolachi, rector of the National Sports University received an award for development of sport sciences in Moldova.
Swimmer Tatiana Salcutan won the Young Talents nomination. The athlete became the Champion of this year's Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. The list also featured 3 wrestlers: YOG gold-medalist Alexandrin Gutu, first U-23 back-to-back Champion in history Daniel Cataraga as well as European and World Junior Champion, U-23 European silver-medalist Anastasia Nichita.
APSM also honored veteran (masters) athletes proudly defending Moldovan honor at European and World Championships. Mihail Malear, multiple European and World Champion in judo and Alexandra Marghiev (athletics) received the awards.
