PRAGUE, December 27, 2018 – Winter Olympian Ester Ledecka was on Friday 21, December, officially named the 2018 Sportsperson of the Year in the Czech Republic by the Czech Sports Journalists Association.
Hundreds of guests from around the country gathered at the Prague Hilton Hotel for the 60th edition of the traditional and prestigious awards ceremony which pays tribute to the best sportsmen of the year as voted for by the Czech Sports Journalists Association. The event, which was transmitted on Czech Television, was first organised by the association in 1959.
There was no gender grouping in the voting process as top ten individuals and top three teams were selected in the first phase before the final decision was made regarding the winners. Women once again announced their supremacy by claiming first and second place at this year’s awards.
Ledecka won an unprecedented Winter Olympics double in snowboarding and alpine skiing at this year’s Games in PyeongChang, becoming the first woman to win gold in two seperate disciplines in a single Winter Olympics.
Speed skating queen Martina Sablikova, who won silver in the Winter Olympic Games 5000m race and also claimed victory at the long distance World Cup, got second place, while Michal Krcmar, silver medalist in Biathlon sprint at the Games in February, settled for third place.
The country’s women’s Fed Cup team claimed the team prize after their triumph over defending champions USA in this year’s Fed Cup finals as they captured the trophy for the sixth time in eight years.
Swimmer Barbora Seemanova was awarded the Best Junior Athlete, while in memoriam, Jana Novotna, the great tennis star who passed away one year ago, was inducted into the Legends Hall.
