LAUSANNE, November 12, 2019 - Two athletes, including Belarusian wrestler Kiryl Hryshchanka, have been sanctioned for doping violations at this year's European Games in Minsk for doping, the European Olympic Committees (EOC) announced on its official website.
Consequently, Hryshchanka has been stripped of the gold medal he won in the Men's Greco-Roman-130kg event having tested positive for Dehydrochloromethyl-testosterone - an Exogenous Anabolic Androgenic Steroid.
The Belarusian defeated Russia's Sergey Semenov 3-1 in the semi-finals and Georgia's Iakobi Kajaia 5-1 in the final match at his home European Games. Kajaia has now been upgraded to gold, while Semenov moves up to silver.
Ukrainian Mykola Kuchmii, who lost to Hryshchanka in the quarter-finals, has been promoted to bronze. The other bronze medal in the division, claimed by Azerbaijan's Sabah Shariati, stays in Azerbaijan.
The EOC said 1170 athletes were tested as part of anti-doping activities during the 2nd edition of the European Games Minsk 2019 - more than 25% of those competing. And alongside Hryshchanka, Croatian boxer Damir Plantić was also found wanting.
Plantić tested positive for Carboxy-THC, a metabolite of tetrahydrocannabinol, formed in the body after cannabis is consumed. He competed in the light heavyweight division at Minsk 2019 and was beaten in the round of 16 by Bayram Malkam of Turkey, so his disqualification does not affect the podium places in that event.
For the 2019 European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Baku, a further 177 young athletes were tested, and one returned adverse analytical findings.
Russian Rustam Dolaev tested positive for meldonium, which was added to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) list of banned substances from January 1, 2016, and will now forfeit the silver medal he won in the men's 51kg freestyle wrestling division at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Baku. Constantin Chirilov of Moldova has been promoted from bronze to silver, with his bronze awarded to Otar Mamulashvili of Georgia.
“As a result of these adverse analytical findings, the athletes have been stripped of their results during the respective competitions, and the information has been forwarded to the relevant International Federations,” the EOC stated.
