BOGOTA, December 9, 2019 - Colombian athletics continues to have a great year, not only for the athletes’ success but also for the organizers of large road races. Sports achievements include the performance of sprinter Anthony Zambrano at World Athletics Championships held in Doha, Qatar where he won the silver medal in the 200 meters, a historic achievement for the country.
Regarding events organization, the half marathon of Bogotá (mmB) was named the only one in the world with a “Platinum Seal”, from the World Athletics (IAAF), out of 165 athletic races with quality labels such as Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze.
By 2020, only twelve competitions will have the Platinum Seal, the highest organizational distinction of the International Federation, among them are the marathons of Tokyo, Nagoya, Seoul, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York. This is great news for Colombian athletics and for the Bogota Half Marathon, a competition that in 2019 reached its 20th edition and which uses a model to advance and improve over the years, thus becoming the only 21k and 97.5m competition in the select group already mentioned.
The inclusion of “Platinum Seal” in the program of labels or stamps that brings together the best road races in the world, demonstrates a renewal for the 2020 season, which aims to increase organizational levels, a full application of the rules, the full support of the authorities for the event, the commitment of the organizers to the advancement of athletics, the presence of the best athletes in the ranking according to the World Athletics list, the massive coverage of local and international media and concrete steps in the global fight against doping” this published by the press office of the event in its official statement.
In addition, the two most important races in Buenos Aires; the 21k and the International Marathon, as well as the Half Marathon and the Rio de Janeiro Marathon received the bronze label.
It should be noted that the contribution from the races organizations that will be part of the 2020 calendar, has managed to raise an extra fund of 2.5 million dollars, which will be used to improve the anti-doping system of the IAAF Unit (A.I.U.).
