LAUSANNE, March 31, 2020 - World Athletics has now turned its attention to the year 2022 in search of new dates for its World Athletics Championships following the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games to the summer of 2021.
The championships were originally planned for August 6-15, 2021, but have had to make way for this year’s biggest sports festival, which had to be deferred due to the coronavirus pandemic that has plagued the world, killing thousands of people.
The IOC, IPC, Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced on Monday that the 2020 Olympic Games will now take place from July 23 to August 8, 2021.
“We support the new 2021 dates for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games announced today (March 30) by the Japanese organisers and the IOC. This gives our athletes the time they need to get back into training and competition,” World Athletics said in a statement
“Everyone needs to be flexible and compromise and to that end we are now working with the organisers of the World Athletics Championships in Oregon on new dates in 2022 for our World Athletics Championships. We are also in discussions with the Commonwealth Games Federation and the European Championships. We would like to thank our Oregon 21 Organising Committee, their stakeholders and our partners for their collaboration and willingness to explore all options.”
The European Championships are currently scheduled for Aug. 26-30 in Paris. The next Commonwealth Games are set for July 27-Aug. 7 2022 in Birmingham, England.
