COLOMBO, April 30, 2020 – Since the outbreak of COVID-19, most of the journalists have been covering coronavirus-related news without proper equipment and knowledge about the risk of the pandemic. Last week, for instance, over 100 journalists tested positive for the virus in India.
After requests made by the Professional Sport Journalist Association of Sri Lanka (PSJASL), Director/Goodwill Ambassador of A Quint Ondaatje Foundation Anna-Marie Q Ondaatje, who is also a well known rhythmic gymnast, donated 30 complete personal protective equipment (PPE) kits to frontline journalists and medical officials.
With the contribution of PSJASL members, a donation of PPE kits, 1000 masks, 20L sanitizers and 500 hand wash soap bars was also extended to the medical staff of the Government’s free ambulance services, “Suwasariya Ambulance Services” and to the medical staff at the isolated Police division area.
“We are all equal and here for a purpose,” rhythmic gymnast Anna-Marie Q Ondaatje stated. “I am ambitious to focus on human rights, creating change in areas of health and safety, education, hunger, shelter, gender equality, foster, abuse, women, disaster response, refugee, sports development, arts, culture and heritage, rural transformation and urban renewal. She added.
Anna-Marie Ondaatje is only 19, but her athletic legacy is already secured: as the first rhythmic gymnast to represent Sri Lanka on the international stage, Ondaatje is already both a pioneer and an ambassador for her sport.
The Professional Sports Journalist Association also donated hand sanitizers and dispersers, which are of utmost importance in the fight against the coronavirus, to the Special Task force.
The President of the PSJASL Karuppiah Ramakrishnan, Secretary Chathuka Divashana, Treasurer Yohan Bahasura and Executive member Kapila Liyanage were present at the donation.
