LAUSANNE, July 29, 2020 – As we approach the end of the first AIPS digital seminar focused on “The Cost of Reporting while Female”, we have reached a total of 102 countries and more than 500 of registrants. Following engaging sessions on UNDERREPRESENTATION, THE FORGOTTEN and PAY GAP, more sensitive and delicate issues will be addressed under the theme, THE GENDER BACKLASH on Thursday, July 30, as the curtain falls on what has been a remarkable women’s seminar series.
AIPS is happy to announce the names of the panelists for the last session of the women’s seminar, which starts at 2pm CET with an opening remark from AIPS President Gianni Merlo. AIPS Secretary General Jura Ozmec will be the moderator.
THE GENDER BACKLASH Women journalists are "twice as likely to be victims of violence" for exercising their right to freedom of expression and for reasons of gender. Women journalists, whether they are working in an insecure context, or in a newsroom, face risks of physical assault, sexual harassment, rape and even murder. They are vulnerable to attacks not only from those attempting to silence their coverage, but also from sources, colleagues and others.
MEET THE PANELISTS
PAMELA MORINIÈRE Pamela Morinière is the head of the Campaign and communications department at the IFJ as well as its gender officer. She joined the IFJ in 2002 and has led diverse projects supporting women in the news across the globe as well as campaigns to promote gender equality in newsrooms and trade unions, fight against discrimination at work, eradicate gender stereotypes in news content and violence against women in the media. She has also authored various publications on gender equality and media has an independent consultant.
DOROTHY NJOROGE Dr. Dorothy Njoroge is the chairperson of the Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) and is also the Ag. Head of the Journalism and Corporate Communication Department at the United States International University-Africa. She is an advocate for gender equality through her activism work on improving the status of women in media and advocacy for the elimination of gender-based violence. She’s presented on issues of gender and political leadership as well as media and gender-based violence in international conferences and has published in the area of gender activism.
CHRISTINE BRENNAN She’s an award-winning national sports columnist for USA Today, a commentator for CNN, ABC News, PBS NewsHour and National Public Radio, a best-selling author and a nationally-known speaker. Named one of the country's top 10 sports columnists by the Associated Press Sports Editors three times, she has covered the last 18 Olympic Games, summer and winter. In March 2020, Brennan was named the winner of the prestigious Red Smith Award, presented annually to a person who has made “major contributions to sports journalism.”
Brennan was the first woman sports writer at The Miami Herald in 1981 and the first woman to cover Washington’s NFL team as a staff writer at The Washington Post in 1985. She was the first president of the Association for Women in Sports Media and started an internship-scholarship program that has supported 175 female students over the past two decades.
Brennan is the author of seven books. Her 2006 sports memoir, Best Seat in the House, is the only father-daughter memoir written by a sports journalist. Her 1996 national best-seller, Inside Edge, was named one of the top 100 sports books of all-time by Sports Illustrated.
Brennan earned undergraduate and master's degrees in journalism from Northwestern University. She is a member of the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame, Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism Hall of Achievement, Northwestern’s Athletic Hall of Fame and the Washington, D.C., Sports Hall of Fame.
RICA ROY She has spent 21 years in the sports media industry as feature writer, news reporter and broadcast journalist. She has covered several key national and international sports events, interviewed sports icons, administrators and people associated with sport business. Rica Roy has closely followed, analysed and reported on two decades of India and world sports. She currently works with New Delhi Television as Deputy Editor and anchors a sports show called Turning Point on NDTV 24x7 (which is on Covid break, just like Indian sports). In the past she has also covered politics, legal and current affairs as an on-field reporter/broadcaster. Her present role is with the Breakfast Team on NDTV 24x7, where she produces and anchors national and international bulletins.
However, her core being sports, she’s in the process of launching her podcast programme ‘IT’S A BUSINESS CALLED CRICKET’ with RedFm. Rica Roy is the only female broadcast sports reporter/anchor in India today. In collaboration with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Women in News and Sports programme, she provides media training to Women Journalists in India.
She is a Chevening Scholar, having done her Broadcast Masters from Cardiff University. She was awarded the WINS (Women in News and Sports) Fellowship by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 2020.
GEORGINA RUIZ SANDOVAL She’s a sports journalist born in Mexico City. Graduated with a Journalism bachelor’s degree from the oldest journalism school in Latin America, Carlos Septién García.
In 2020 she reached 30 years of professional experience in written, electronic and digital media.
Pioneer as female play-by-play in live and taped TV Broadcast with specialization in Cycling, Olympic sports and American Football (NFL).
Known as the voice of cycling in Latin America, she has broadcasted 19 Tours de France uninterruptedly, in addition to 4 Giro d’Italia and 5 Tours of Spain; as well as other races on the World Tour calendar.
She has reported on site more than 50 races such as the Giro d'Italia, Basque Country, Amstel Gold Race, Fleche Wallone, Milano San Remo, Giro de Lombardia, Tour of Catalonia, Tirreno Adriatico, UCI Road and UCI Track Championships, Tour of San Luis, Tour of San Juan, Tour Colombia, Tour of Guatemala, Tour of Costa Rica, Tour of Chihuahua and Tour of Colombia among others.
He has also covered the Olympic Games, Pan American Games and Central American and Caribbean Games, as well as World Athletics Championships.
Two-time winner of the India Catalina award for best sports presenter in Colombia in 2017 and 2018.
Host and play-by-play cycling programming at Señal Colombia and CARACOL TV since 2016.
