TASHKENT, March 3, 2025 - Shakhzodxuja Sharipov secured Uzbekistan's first gold on the final day of the Judo Grand Slam in the Uzbek capital of Tashkent, igniting the passionate home crowd as the three-day tournament came to an end.
Thirteen countries across Asia, Europe and Panamerica won medals at the Grand Slam which took place from 1-3 March. The host nation won an incredible total of 12 medals, even without the majority of their Olympic and world medallists. On the final day, Sharipov raised the roof by winning the country’s first and only gold of the tournament in the men’s -90 category and he was presented with his medal by Uzbekistan’s first Olympic judo champion Diyora Keldiyorova and the President of the Uzbek federation, Azizjon Kamilov.
This World Judo Tour event in Tashkent also produced young stars who could have many years of success ahead of them, such as 19-year-old Kano Miyaki (JPN) and 17-year-old Chihiro Yamaguchi (JPN). There were also upsets in the tournament as some number ones were knocked out early by relative unknowns, such as Xinran Niu (CHN, +78 kg), Bekmurodov (UZB, -66 kg), Shakhzodxuja Sharipov (UZB, -90 kg) and Karina Efimova (IJF, -52 kg). These are names to commit to memory as they are likely to perform again, beyond Uzbekistan’s borders.
With the conclusion of the Tahskent Grand Slam 2025, all eyes are now focused on Austria. The Upper Austria Grand Prix is set to take place from 7-9 March in Linz and 455 judoka from 53 countries are expected to participate, including big names such as Matthias Casse (BEL), Assunta Scutto (ITA) Distria Krasniqi (KOS) and Francisco Garrigos (ESP).
