BEIRUT, September 12, 2020 - Following the devastating explosion that occurred in Beirut, Lebanon over a month ago, the Beirut Marathon Association has scheduled a global virtual charity race to raise funds for the Lebanese Red Cross. 100 percent of the registration proceeds will be donated.
Lebanon witnessed the fifth biggest explosion reported in human history in the Port of Beirut on August 4, 2020, which claimed hundreds of lives, wounded more than 5,000 and left more than 300,000 Lebanese without shelter. It also caused material and infrastructural damage amounting to billions of dollars.
The Lebanese Red Cross has done the much-needed urgent humanitarian work on the ground and continues to first handedly aid victims of the explosion; treating people suffering from injuries and providing emergency shelter, food, water and other essentials for vulnerable families.
To support them, Beirut Marathon Association has organized a non-competitive
5KM charity race, which would see participants run at their convenience between the 1st and 8th of October.
“In addition to reaching out to all Lebanese and friends of Lebanon around the
world, we are also approaching global, international and regional companies to ask for assistance to help us by mobilizing their employees to register to our run in aid of our country.
“With everyone’s help by promoting this event amongst their communities, we aim to reach the greatest number of participants worldwide,” organizers said in a brief made available to AIPS.
Starting from September 17th, interested participants can register for the race with a fee of $30 or more. All proceeds with no exception will be donated to the Lebanese Red Cross.
Registration continues for 3 weeks. People can register through Haku, an American platform serving many virtual Marathons.
The link to register will be displayed on the association’s Instagram bio: @beirutmarathon. More information on the event can be found here, and one can also visit the association’s website: www.beirutmarathon.org.
