New AIPS magazine now online: e-College, e-Conference and seminars amid COVID-19 challenges

LAUSANNE, September 22, 2020 - The iconic photo of AIPS founding members in a boxing ring in Paris in 1924 adorns the cover of the latest edition of the AIPS Magazine, which is now online and available for download. As AIPS turned 96 in July amid unprecedented circumstances across the globe, the trip down memory lane highlights the journey so far and inspires togetherness for the present and future. Issue III of 2020 captures the response of AIPS in “one of the most difficult moments in the history of mankind”, with the world still trying to adjust to the “new normal” imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
JULY 2 (AIPS E-CONFERENCE) More than 350 colleagues from more than 140 countries attended the first AIPS World e-conference, which took place on Zoom, on July 2, to celebrate the 96th anniversary of the Association and the World Sports Journalists Day amid lockdown restrictions. The event featured an international panel comprising some of the brightest minds in the sport media industry, who shared there opinions on the topic: “Has Covid-19 affected journalists’ independence and future?” Pages 28-45 have got you covered.
LIMITED PRESS ACCESS No thanks to the global pandemic, sports journalists are now having to endure limited access to sports venues, which is understandable for health reasons. However, as AIPS President Gianni Merlo highlighted in his editorial on page 11, this current situation is “a huge threat to healthy and independent journalism”. Shinsuke Kobayashi, the Deputy Managing Director, Kyodo News, also pointed out on page 43 that “as watchdogs of power and authority, we should not be pushed aside in the post-corona landscape”. And AIPS Mentor Martin Mazur urged on page 79 that “we have to be ready to change this very limited, restricted number of journalists inside stadiums”.
RACISM Another prevalent theme addressed in the latest issue of the AIPS Magazine is racism. This year has seen sports figures and organisations take a stand (and, literally, a knee) against racial injustice and police brutality like never before. And AIPS Mentor Riccardo Romani recalled his meeting with Colin Kaepernick in New York City two years ago. Romani shared an intense two-page spread (22-23) of his conversation with the American football quarterback who sacrificed his NFL career to fight for social justice. AIPS Vice President Evelyn Watta also tackled racism and discrimination during the AIPS World e-Conference on July (Page 35).
THE COST OF REPORTING WHILE FEMALE From July 21 to 30, AIPS organised a seminar entitled: “The cost of reporting while female”. It provided a platform for women journalists from all over the world to share their experiences while receiving mentorship from some of the most inspiring women professionals in the industry. The four-part seminar was held on Zoom with simultaneous interpretation in Arabic, English, French and Spanish. Although conversations around gender inequality are not new, this seminar set the tone for a refreshing series of discussions about one of the most prevalent issues in society as can be seen on
pages 46-55.
AIPS E-COLLEGE After two months of 16 intense classes featuring 15 inspiring guests from the sports industry, the AIPS e-College culminated with an interactive farewell appointment on June 2. The innovative distance-learning programme, held on Zoom, was a way to continue the renowned AIPS Young Reporters Programme, offering opportunities, tools and answers to the next generation; helping them adapt in the absence of live sports. Young Reporters from up to 47 countries took part in project, with an average attendance of over 70 journalists per lesson. The first five guests were featured in the last issue of the magazine, so this issue proudly presents the remaining 10 (pages 56-77): Lucia Montanarella - Head of Olympic Games Media Operations, Craig Reedie - former WADA President and IOC Member, Haile Gebrselassie - two-time Olympic gold medalist, Eric Saintrond - FISU Secretary General, Danilo Gallinari - NBA star, Donna De Varona - Olympic gold medalist, activist and sports broadcaster, Special Olympics & Fiona Hynes - Special Olympics Europe and Asia Director of Communications, FIFA esports & MoAuba - 2019 FIFA eWorld Cup champion, Nawal El Moutawakel - Olympic gold medalist and IOC member, Jamil Chade - investigative reporter. They have tackled a variety of subjects from the Olympics to media operations in major tournaments, sports and law, anti-doping, fair play, gender-equality and investigative reporting.
AIPS SPORT MEDIA AWARDS Given that sports competitions are gradually resuming after the lockdown that affected many countries, the submission deadline for this year’s AIPS Sports Media Awards was extended by a month to offer colleagues more time to submit their work about recent sports events. The deadline originally set for October 7 has been moved to November 9. For more information on the Awards, visit www.aipsawards.com.
