BEIRUT, November 6, 2020 - Following the organisation of its first global virtual charity race, where all proceeds went to the Lebanese Red Cross, the Beirut Marathon has on Thursday announced another event scheduled for November 8 “to commemorate 18 years of commitment to our community”.
It is a friendly half marathon that will see 350 runners participating free of charge under under extreme Covid-19 measures. The race is in support of Offre Joie, a Lebanese NGO that has relentlessly been working to aid people in distress.
At the finish line, participants will be awarded symbolic hand-made medals crafted out of the shattered glass caused by the horrific Beirut blast of August 4.
“Join us on this special day at the Beirut WaterFront at 6:30 am and let us revive our country together against all odds,” May El Khalil, Beirut Marathon Association president, urged.
“Let us bring the spirit back!”
From October 1-15, the Beirut Marathon Association organised a non-competitive 5km global virtual race to raise funds for the Lebanese Red Cross, which did the much-needed urgent humanitarian work to first handedly aid victims of the August 4 explosion.
The Beirut blast claimed hundreds of lives, wounded more than 5,000 and left more than 300,000 Lebanese without shelter. It also caused material and infrastructural damage amounting to billions of dollars.
