FREETOWN, March 26, 2021 - Since 2019 when an extra-ordinary congress resolution was adopted to increase the number of teams in the Sierra Leone Premier League from 14 to 18 clubs, the local federation has finally confirmed the participation of eighteen teams in this season’s (2020/2021) male top tier League.
The General Secretary of the Sierra Leone Football Association Christopher Kamara maintained that: “the increase of teams in the county’s top tier championship will ensure a regional balance in the elite competition.”
All maiden four spots have already been occupied by Wusum Stars, Bai Bureh Warriors, Sierra Leone Police and SLIFA Mount Aureole, the newly promoted teams from the county’s First Division playoff played across the five regions from March 9-19, 2021 joining the other fourteen male clubs in the Sierra Leone Premier League.
Traditional rivals Bai Bureh Warriors and Wusum Stars return to the Premier League after almost a decade of staying relegated while the Sierra Leone Police and SLIFA Mount Aureole finally realize their dreams of entering the competition.
It’s evident in the country’s Premier League that the 2018/2019 season’s championship, which saw East End Lions emerge champions after an unbeaten run under John Keister the club’s previous Head coach, attracted the largest crowd as well as government’s support unlike the 2019/2020 period when the League was annulled due to Coronavirus with no champion declared.
February 19, 2021 was the date announced for start of the League but it was deferred to a later date which is yet to be unveiled by the League Board headed by Lawyer Alieu Vandy as Chairman.
