LAUSANNE, November 13, 2021 – From one heated debate to another, the world of football is seemingly simmering towards boiling point. A bomb waiting to explode, as the cover of the latest AIPS Magazine suggests. This issue of the quarterly magazine takes an indepth look at the concept of a biennial World Cup and its impact on the international sporting calendar. It also looks back on the Tokyo 2020 Summer Games and ahead to the Beijing 2022 Winter Games.
BIENNIAL WORLD CUP Following on from a chaotic spring due to the creation, condemnation and eventual dissolution of the European Super League, the world of football has, since the summer, been overwhelmed by the debate over plans for a biennial World Cup. The idea has provoked an “open warfare” that goes beyond football, as AIPS Football Delegate Keir Radnedge explains from page 32. Radnedge also describes the concept as a “financially beneficial temptation for minnow federations” on page 34. In his editorial on pages 8 and 9, AIPS President Gianni Merlo shared his view on the issue.
TOKYO 2020 While the International Olympic Committee (IOC) constantly pushed for the Tokyo 2020 Games to go ahead in 2021, it also haboured doubts about the possibility of that ever happening within the pandemic context. But the Tokyo 2020 organisers braved the odds to deliver a unique memorable Games that proved successful in many different ways, some of which Merlo recalls in his editorial. Australian journalist Tracey Holmes, Senior Reporter ABC Sport, shares a heartfelt “Farewell to Tokyo” on page 48. This segment also features exclusive interviews with Lucia Montanarella, Associate Director Olympic Games Media Operations, and Yiannis Exarchos, Olympic Broadcasting Services CEO.
BEIJING 2022 The Beijing 2022 organisers have announced a closed loop magagement system among other Covid-19 countermeasures set to be enforced for the Winter Games scheduled to start on February 4, 2022, but the restrictions outlined in the first version of the playbook have not gone down well with many journalists accredited to cover the Games, including Gianni Merlo. The AIPS President is hoping that Beijing 2022 organisers can get rid of some of the “absurd directives” ahead of the Games (page 9). On November 5, organisers tried to clarify some of the doubts members of the press have about the playbook and the details of this press briefing are on pages 56 to 63.
EURO 2020 From June 11, 2021 to July 11, 2021, European football’s governing body UEFA achieved its goal of hosting the Euro 2020 across different host cities in different countries despite Covid-19 concerns. Keir Radnedge writes about how much the tournament, which Italy won, meant to football as a whole. He also writes about the unbelievable transfer window that witnessed unexpected moves for Cristiano Ronaldo and Leo Messi.
AFGHANISTAN NEEDS SPORT The Taliban takeover in Afghanistan in August almost ended the Paralympic dreams of Zakia Khudadadi and Hossain Rasouli, but with Australia’s help, they eventually fled their country and arrived in Tokyo for the Games. In an exclusive interview with Tracey Holmes for ABC Sport, both athletes expressed their immense gratitude to everyone who was involved in the rescue mission that gave them a new lease on life when it seemed like all hope was lost (pages 50-51). Through his personal experience, AIPS Mentor Riccardo Romani shares on pages 24 and 25 that “keeping sport alive is the only way to prevent Afghanistan from the abyss”.
