FIG statement on the court-approved agreement between USA Gymnastics and the victims of sexual abuse

LAUSANNE, December 17, 2021 - Please find below FIG’s statement following the settlement reached between USA Gymnastics and the committee of the sexual abuse victims, which a US court-approved.
Beyond the agreement, the FIG is pleased to see USA Gymnastics’ commitments to strengthen safe sports policies further, especially having at least one survivor on its Board of Directors and several committees.
While the legal case is now closed, the resonance of this dramatic affair will not fade. Thanks to the bravery of these young women, light has been shed on some systemic patterns within the Gymnastics training culture that made violence and abuse all too possible.

While the legal case is now closed, the resonance of this dramatic affair will not fade. Thanks to the bravery of these young women, light has been shed on some systemic patterns within the Gymnastics training culture that made violence and abuse all too possible.
That led the FIG to strengthen its legal framework to protect athletes and other persons involved in gymnastics better and establish an independent adjudicatory body, the Gymnastics Ethics Foundation, where anyone can confidentially report a case of violation, abuse and harassment.
Since then, the FIG has also worked on several initiatives to raise awareness of youth protection and encourage its national member federations to adopt best practices - notably with the recent launch of “The 10 Golden Rules of Gymnastics” campaign.
