The goalkeeper of the Blues and Lions of Teranga really crushed the competition for the trophy of the best foreign-based football player named after late Jules Bocande. The vote by sports journalists from different media houses granted Mendy 321 points ahead of Mané (99 points) and Sarr (61 points). The results were published live on television.
Mendy succeeds Sadio Mané, who won the title six times in a row.
A month before the start of the AFCON 2021, it is a consecration for the Lions' goalkeeper who, with his team, is still chasing a continental crown.
For Mendy, this distinction is also a great source of motivation, following the frustration he must have felt after being ruled out for the most part of the 2019 AFCON due to injury. The Teranga Lions lost 1-0 to the Fennecs of Algeria in the final that year.
Mendy was voted best goalkeeper in the UEFA Champions League, which he won with Chelsea.
On the local level, Jean-Louis Barthélémy Diouf, striker from Génération Foot Club, claimed the best footballer title. He was followed by Mouttarou Baldé, from Teungueth FC, and Pape Demba Diop, from Diambars FC ranked third.
