Olympic Ski Champion Samer Maroun Tawk of Lebanon back to competition after recovering from near fatal 14m fall

BEIRUT, January 10, 2022 – An inescapable ski fall on el Makmel mountain located in Lebanon for Cross-country skier Samer Maroun Tawk, 24 years old, after he came back from PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games at 15 kilometres, Men’s Cross-country Skiing and being the flagbearer at the Opening Ceremony of PyeongChang 2018, had a life-changing incident in 2019, causing serious injuries varying from a broken hip at four locations splitting it into half, torn urethral tract, dislocated elbow, broken arm, internal bleeding, pinched sciatic nerve left him half-paralyzed for a few months.
HIS STORY DID NOT END HERE Samer was determined to return to skiing as the 24-year-old took the way towards recovery after several surgeries and physical therapy, starting from his hospital bed with a team of doctors, physiotherapists, nutritionists and sports psychologists when he wasn’t able to move he was doing mental exercises to simulate skiing in bed, he was lucky to have people coming up to him and offer support from all aspects to get over his traumatic accident, gradually getting back on his feet after a few months of his accident.
BACK ON TRACK despite doctors saying he wouldn’t be able to walk normally again. But when Samer started walking again, he gradually started to go back to skiing in the Lebanese mountains, and nearly two years after his incident today Samer travelled during November and December 2021 to Europe (Italian and Austrian ski mountains) for physical conditioning tour aiming to prepare him physically through training and participation in small competitions.
“MY GOAL IS TO GO BACK TO COMPETITION” despite the chronic pain he is going through, Samer intends to go back to international competition, and aims for the Next Winter Olympic Games: “I was inspired by alpine ski athletes Candide Thovex and Lindsey Vonn who both recovered from serious injuries and kept on competing, I am still young and I believe I can achieve so much, the more I recover, the more I have high hopes of not just walking, not just skiing, but high-level competing, I have seen the bottom now I'm ready for the top.” Samer Tawk said.
