DAKAR, January 11, 2022 - Oumar Diarra, a sports journalist and former general secretary of the Senegalese National Sport Press Association (ANPS), has passed away. The news of his death was announced on January 10 while the Senegal National Football Team were playing their first match at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon against Zimbabwe (1-0). Diarra was ill and away from the newsroom for several years.
In their testimonies, colleagues were unanimous on the qualities of the man. Oumar the humanist, the professional, is gone. Diarra held the position of secretary general of ANPS for two terms under the presidency of Mamadou Koumé. “We worked in perfect harmony. Very respectful, Oumar was also very courteous. When we travelled abroad for the AIPS congresses, Oumar was very careful with me. He had built a network of contacts among African journalists. He had a generous character and was eager to learn. I pray for the repose of his soul and offer my condolences to his family and relatives,” wrote Koumé on the ANPS exchange platform. In a statement, the ANPS office saluted the memory of a good man, a brilliant professional, who served the Senegalese sports press throughout Africa and the world.
In his career as a journalist, Oumar Diarra served at these newspapers; Le Matin, Le Pays, Direct News, Ndamli.sn and lately at MaderPost. He was always recognised for his professionalism and passion for sport.
Even when he was ill, Diarra was very present on the platforms of exchange of journalists, especially sports journalists. He did not fail to share his enlightened opinion on sports debates and news. The news of his death surprised and saddened the entire Senegalese sports press.
