BOGOTÁ, February 3, 2022 – This February 4, the Olympic dream will begin for 438 athletes from the American Continent, who will be representing 16 countries and covering 15 sports in the competition. Traditionally, the United States and Canada will have the largest delegations, with 224 and 215 respectively.
Participation of the other countries of the continent:
AMERICAN SAMOA Nathan Crumpton the only representative from American Samoa will compete in Skeleton. Although he was unable to participate in the 2018 winter edition, he did at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, competing in the 100m, achieving the second-fastest time for his country in the history of the summer games.
ARGENTINA Six athletes make up the Argentine delegation in which Francesca Baruzzi Farriol and Franco Dal Farra will be the flag bearers. Verónica María Ravenna, who has participated in the Lillehammer 2016 Youth Olympic Games and in Pyeongchang 2018, stands out in the team. On the other hand, Francesca Baruzzi also participated in Lillehammer 2016. For Tomas Birkner, Franco Dal Farra, María Victoria Rodríguez López and Nahiara Díaz González, this will be their Olympic debut.
BOLIVIA Will participate for the seventh time in the Winter Games, this time Simón Breitfuss Kammerlander in Alpine Skiing and Timo Juhani in Cross Country Skiing will be the representatives.
BRAZIL Its first participation in the Winter Games was in Albertville 1992. In Beijing, 10 athletes will compete in 5 sports. Edson Luques Bindilatti of the Bobsleigh team reaches his third Winter Olympic Games, after participating in Sochi 2014 and PyeongChang 2018. Michel Macedo will compete in Alpine Skiing, thus completing his third Olympic Games, taking into account that he was in the Lillehammer 2016 Youth and PyeongChang 2018. CHILE Beijing 2022 will be the eighteenth time that Chile participate in the winter games, this time with four athletes. Yonathan Jesús Fernández (Cross Country Skiing), Dominique Ohaco (Freestyle Skiing), Henrik Von Appen (Alpine Skiing) and Emilia Aramburo (Alpine Skiing), precisely this last sport is the one that has had the most Chilean participation, in total there have been 43 athletes, 4 have participated in Biathlon, 2 in Freestyle Skiing and 1 in Cross Country Skiing. Turin 2006 was the edition in which it had the largest delegation, it participated with 9 athletes.
COLOMBIA After Vancouver 2010 and PyeongChang, Colombia reaches its third Winter Olympic Games for Seniors, (it also had a presence in Lillehammer 2016). For Michael Poettoz who will compete in Alpine Skiing, these will be his third Olympic Games (Lillehammer and PyeongChang), Laura Gómez (Speed Skating) becomes the first woman from Colombia to qualify for two consecutive Olympic Games, while Carlos Andrés Quintana (Cross Country Skiing) will make his debut.
ECUADOR Sarah Escobar makes history for Ecuador by becoming the first woman to participate in the Olympic Games. The 19-year-old will participate in Alpine Skiing, one of the most traditional disciplines of the Games. This is the second time for Ecuador in the Olympics, the first was Klaus Jungbluth in PyeongChang.
HAITI 19 years old, Richardson Viano will be the first Haitian to compete in the Winter Olympics. Richardson was born in Haiti, but was adopted by an Italian family living in France, where he learned to ski at an early age. The Franco-Italian-Haitian athlete will compete in Alpine Skiing.
JAMAICA Six Jamaicans will be participating in Beijing 2022, with the Bobsleigh team made up of Jazmine Fenlator Victorian, Rolando Reid, Shanwayne Stephens, Nimroy Turgott and Ashley Watson, in addition to Benjamin Alexander who qualified in Alpine Skiing. Calgary 1988 was Jamaica's debut at the Winter Games, since then it has only missed the 2006 games. Participation has been mainly in Bobsleigh. In Vancouver 2010 Errol Kerr competed in freestyle skiing and in PyeongChang 2018 Anthony Watson competed in men's skeleton.
MEXICO Donovan Carrillo in Figure Skating, Rodolfo Roberto Dickson Sommers and Sarah Schleper in Alpine Skiing and Jonathan Soto Moreno in Cross Country Skiing make up the delegation of athletes in Beijing 2022. Sarah Schleper, 43, is the only woman on the team and reaches her sixth Olympic Games; since 2014 she competes for Mexico, her country for adoption. For Rodolfo Dickson, this will be his second Olympic event, while for Donovan Carrillo and Jonathan Soto, this will be their debut.
PERU For the third time Ornella Oettl Reyes will participate in the winter games. The athlete who will compete in Alpine Skiing represented Peru in Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014, being the first woman to wear the Peruvian colours.
PUERTO RICO The island has participated in the Winter Games since 1984, this being the seventh time. Kellie Delka who will participate in Skeleton is the second woman to take part in the Games, and for both her and William Flaherty (Alpine Skiing), this will be their debut.
TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO Axel Brown and Andre Marcano will represent Trinidad and Tobago at the Beijing 2022 in Bobsleigh. After 20 years, the Caribbean country returns to the fair; they participated for the first time in the 1994 edition and then in 1998 and 2002.
VIRGIN ISLANDS US The representation will be in charge of Katie Tannenbaum who will participate in Skeleton. The country returns to the Winter Olympics after being absent in 2018. The first participation was in 1988 and to date, it has completed 7 participations.
