Men’s Sabre World Cup: Frustrating bronze for Bazadze, great sixth place for Georgia in team event

Sandro Bazadze was aiming for a better finish

MADRID, May 24, 2022 - The Spanish capital, Madrid, held one of the most prestigious fencing tournament of the year – World Cup 2022.
Beside all of the favourites, seven Georgians were participating in Madrid World Cup: Lasha Kuchukhidze, Nikoloz Cheishvili, Vakhtang Archvadze, Beka Bazadze, Vazha Rechia, Goga Kakauridze and of course, Georgian number one – Sandro Bazadze.
Vazha Rechia left the tournament after the first round, Vakhtang Archvadze and Lasha Kuchukhidze lost in the second, Nikoloz Cheishvili in the third. Stage four or 1/32 final, was an insurmountable barrier for Beka Bazadze and Goga kakauridze.
But everything went into another direction for Georgian number one.
Sandro Bazadze, as one of the top seeds, began the tournament from the level 1/32. Bazadze, who was fourth at the Olympics, began with an easy win to a British leader, William deary – 15:6. Than Bazadze was better than American number one and world number six Eli Dershwitz (15:10), after that the Georgian beat Tunisian fencer and world number thirteen Farez Ferjani (15:11).
The Semi-final against Italian star and world number five, Luca Curatoli, was difficult, as it was spectacular. The 27-year-old Italian won the balanced battle, in which the leader changed several times by a microscopic margin. He tingled his Georgian opponent first at the golden score (15:14) and went into the final, where he lost to world number one, South Korean Oh Sanguk.
A bronze medal was a little bit frustrating result for Bazadze, but on the other hand, he replaced the legend of the sport, three times Olympic champion, Hungarian Aron Szilagyi in third place of the world ranking with 186 points.
For now, Bazadze is not only Georgian, but European number one in Sabre fencing. Only two South Koreans are higher than Sandro – Oh Sanguk with 192 points and Kim Junghwan with 189 points.
Also, team competition was held in Madrid. Sandro Bazadze, Beka Bazadze, Goga kakauridze and Lasha Kuchukhidze were representing the Georgian national team. They began their path with an easy win against the Belgian team (45:24). Second round was much more difficult. One of the best Asian team, Iran, lost to the Georgians in a golden score – 44:45. Bazadze and his teammates left the competition for medals after losing to the hot favourites – Hungarian team. But the Georgians continued the battle for a position as high as possible and after overcoming the Americans (45:39) and losing against France 36:45, they finished the competition in the sixth position, which in the overall number of 26 participating teams, could be seen as a great result.
