“Vince The Prince” Kompany from Anderlecht to Burnley?: “Either you have money or you have patience”

Vincent-Kompany has parted ways with Anderlecht

BRUSSELS, May 27, 2022 - He came back to Anderlecht as “Vince The Prince”, but exactly three years and one week later, Vincent Kompany (36) and the Brussels club Anderlecht have parted ways. Sacked. Although his contract expires after one more season. The divorce had been coming for a while. Kompany's assistants and friends Ngalula and Munienge, for example, did recently not receive a contract extension. But the end of “The Process”, as Kompany described his ambition at Anderlecht, still tastes a bit like trauma for all parties - the coach, the club, the supporters, the board and owners.
Kompany, a star player at Anderlecht and especially at Manchester City, will not remain unemployed for long, however. Some German clubs have him on their wish list, but Burnley, especially, owned by Alen Pace, would like to have Kompany. Kompany may soon be at Turf Moore. It is also a preferred location for Mrs Carla Kompany and the kids, who have always wanted to go back to Manchester. And Burnley is only an hour drive away.
How and why it finally went wrong for Vincent Kompany at Anderlecht? The early European elimination against Vitesse Arnhem, too many weak matches, unsatisfactory results plus eye-catching plays, and the third place in the Belgian competition (with 4 defeats against the newly promoted city rival Union, who finished second behind Club Brugge), the lost cup final against AA Gent… Too many ups and downs with his too romantic Guardiola-concept that, due to the limited talent and experience in his team, lacked realism.
- “Underachievement”-
“Either you have money or you have patience”. With better results and stats than the season before, Kompany calls the final results an overachievement. But the board rather considers it an underachievement as the potential was not maximized. A difference in vision, in appreciation, in management-concept and perspective: that is why the club management and Kompany broke up, in a polished, civilized way and without open conflict. But it is striking how clearly some players thank Kompany and wish him all the best… He definitely has made a positive contribution or at least impression on players, clubs and trainers. For a sensible, matured and more experienced Kompany - perhaps at Burnley - the task awaits to revitalize and build a team with a refined version of ‘The Process’. Anderlecht hopes with a new trainer (perhaps Felice Mazzu from fellow townsman Union!) to achieve results and playing style that can seduce and satisfy its difficult, demanding fans.
