LAUSANNE, July 6, 2022 – Let’s talk about Islamic Solidarity Games! It is a multinational, multi-sport event that involves elite athletes from over 54 nations who compete in over 21 different sports and 268 events. Organized every 4 years, the 5th edition of the Games will be held in Konya, Turkey from August 9-18, 2022, these Games have special importance in the Islamic countries that the opening ceremony in all editions was featured by the president of each host country.
HISTORY OF ISLAMIC SOLIDARITY GAMES The Solidarity Games were initially created to strengthen Islamic comradery and reinforce the values of Islam, especially for the youth. The organisations responsible for the Games are: the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSF), headquarters in and the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) which directs and controls the events, first edition was in Mecca, KSA in 2005, and the second was scheduled to be hosted in Tehran, Iran in 2010 but was cancelled, the third edition was in Palembang, Indonesia 2013, and the fourth in Baku, Azerbaijan 2017, the fifth will be in Konya, Turkey 2022.
SPORTS PROMOTE PEACE Mr Abdolhamid Ahmadi, AIPS EC member and Iranian delegation NOC Advisor says: ”Sport is the best way to decrease political tension between countries, as we have witnessed with each edition of the Solidarity Games, the situation is becoming better” this is a great cultural exchange opportunity for athletes as each delegation has a special cultural program suggested by ISSF to tour around the host city.
MEDIA ATTENTION INCREASING The ISSF is aware of the importance of media in such events, therefore Konya 2021 Head of Media, Mr Murat Acga said: ”Each delegation participating in Konya 2021 is accompanied by at least one journalist, for better media coverage of the event” meanwhile Mr Ahmadi stated that there will be 13 Iranian journalists covering various sports in Konya.
LONGEVITY AFFECTED BY POLITICS AND ECONOMY The ISSF strives to improve Islamic solidarity and promote Islamic identity through sports, however, this mission is not as simple when politics and economy come along, as you see, Muslim countries in different continents have some political fragmentation, which affected the occurrences of these games, the Tehran 2010 Games were postponed for one year then eventually cancelled after political tension between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
ECONOMY AFFECTS PARTICIPATION The deficiencies in economic development in many Muslim countries, especially in Africa have affected the number of participating countries, the financial cost of the Islamic Solidarity Games for delegations is funded by the NOC of each country, while the host city is funded by OIC and ISSF. Therefore, the financial challenges the ISSF member countries face are impacting the longevity of the games.
SUCCESSFUL GAMES Regardless of the difficulties the ISSF and the Games might face, which can exist in any multinational event, Islamic solidarity or not, political tension and economical difficulties can create obstacles for sports, but the organisation of such events is praised for the message it holds, a message of peace, tolerance and cooperation.
