LAUSANNE, July 17, 2022 - From the celebration of sports media excellence in Doha to the preparations for the upcoming elective Congress in Rome (from 2nd to 6th of October, 2022). Many stories can be found in the latest version of the AIPS Magazine, published in such an immersive and decisive moment for the Association, which remains committed to the affairs of sports journalists in such a struggling and complicated time, due to the global pandemic, the war in Ukraine and tension spreading around the world. Issues make the role and values of sports journalism even more crucial than before.
“IT’S ONLY WHEN WE ARE UNITED THAT WE CAN SAVE ALL” AIPS President Gianni Merlo highlighted these profound words his editorial. The boxing ring in which prominent personalities from all over the world - Torsten Tegner from Sweden, Franz Reichel (the first AIPS President) Victor Bion from Belgium, Andrej Sekura from Czechoslovakia and Henry Pozzi from France - founded the International Sports Press Association is the perfect metaphor to represent the intense and decisive fight that sports journalism needs to conduct in troubled times of war and chaos, moments in which sports journalists “must act, defend our freedom, our independence, our human rights which are in danger everywhere”.
AIPS SPORT MEDIA AWARDS WINNERS A stunning open-air ceremony at Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar, was how AIPS celebrated sports media excellence on 12 July. Finalists gathered from all around the world, having passed through a long and intense evaluation process, to be honoured at a ceremony organised in collaboration with the Qatar Sports Press Committee and broadcast internationally by Al Kass Sports TV Channels, underlining the importance of the event that this year reached its fourth edition.
More than 30 journalists, photographers and videographers became the new reference for sports media excellence. After a prelude to specially recognize the Arab journalists who reached top positions in the AIPS Awards in various categories an emotional moment introduced the ceremony by introducing the story of Ukrainian journalist Vladislav Dunaienko, an AIPS Young Reporter that chose to become a soldier following the Russian invasion of his territory.
After this touching moment, AIPS celebrated winners of the Awards in all its 11 main categories, following other special recognitions to journalists whose works and efforts provided an excellent quality to the Awards. A special occasion in which AIPS and many National Associations marked what sports journalism is trying to accomplish day after day in the face is crises and issues that are putting our profession itself in serious trouble.
