Three Sri Lankans declared missing from Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games village

BIRMINGHAM, August 4, 2022 - A Sri Lankan wrestler called Sanith Chathuranga went missing in Birmingham on Wednesday, August 3. He had tested positive for COVID- 19 upon arrival and was isolating in a hospital.
Prior to Chathuranga ghosting the Sri Lankan team, a female judoka and judo team manager had deserted the camp.
The West Midland police stated an enquiry into the missing Sri Lankan athletes and official is currently ongoing. The Sri Lankan athletes are accommodated in Coventry.
Mike Wood, News Manager of West Midland Police spoke to News Cutter exclusively saying that two individuals who were staying at West Midlands to attend the Commonwealth Games have been reported missing.
“The woman in her thirties and a man who is in his forties were reported missing on August 1. They had been staying in the Coventry area,” he said.
“A Sri Lankan athlete and a senior official have gone missing after the fifth day’s events of the 22nd Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England on August 2,” he said.
Initial reports indicate that a female judoka and the manager of the Sri Lanka judo team have disappeared from the Sri Lankan camp soon after she lost her first-round event on August 1.
Sri Lanka are fielding a 110-member strong contingent and 51 officials for the Commonwealth Games with the judo team consisting of three men and two women.
At the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, eight Cameroonian athletes, including three weightlifters and five boxers, disappeared from the Athletes' Village. There were also reports of athletes and officials from Sierra Leone, Rwands, Uganda and Ghana vanishing.
