ROME, Italy, October 5, 2022. The new AIPS America Executive Committee election was held for the first time outside the American continent.
The 84th AIPS Annual Congress served as the stage for the election of the new Executive Committee of this Continental Association where the Colombian Carlos Julio Castellanos was elected unanimously by the 16 delegates present in Rome, for 2022-2026. Castellanos, who served as Vice President of the continental association, and who should have assumed the presidency at the beginning of 2021 after the resignation of Paraguayan Gabriel Cazenave, received full support and trust from the voting presidents/delegates.
In Rome, at the Macro room of the Carpegna Palace Hotel, Alberto Rico from Mexico was also elected by acclamation as Treasurer and Moisés Ávalos from Nicaragua as Vice President. “With the election of Carlos Julio Castellanos, AIPS America began a new cycle of institutional life”, expressed Luis Vargas, Delegate of Venezuela.
For the General Secretary position, the assembly chose the Venezuelan Luis Vargas after receiving 8 votes in favour defeating Walter Saltos from Ecuador.
On the other hand, and taking into account the size of the American continent, the assembly voted the Vice Presidents by region. For Central America, the Guatemalan Erick Álvarez was elected by acclamation, while Fernando Nürnberg from Bolivia beat Desney Romeo from Suriname 8 votes to 7, becoming Vice President of the South zone.
Kenya Torres Florentino from Honduras, the only woman president of a National Association in the Americas, received the full support of the Assembly and was named Pro Treasurer by acclamation. Finally, and also by acclamation, Danilo Díaz from Chile and Walter Saltos from Ecuador were elected as Director and Pro Secretary, respectively.
