Gegi Kikabidze, goalkeeper of the Georgian national team

TBILISI, October 31, 2022 - Kazakhstan won the football tournament for sports journalists named after the legendary Georgian commentator Kote Makharadze. In the final, the visitors beat the Georgian national team in a penalty shootout.
The main organisers of the tournament were the Georgian Football Federation and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth of Georgia.
The tournament took place at the New Vision University, which was a partner of the competition. Other partners include the Association of Sports Journalists of Georgia and the International Foundation for Sports, Tourism and Youth.
Eight teams participated. The first group included Kazakhstan I, Armenia, Moldova and Ukraine. Unfortunately, Ukraine could not come and Georgian journalists came to the tournament on its behalf.
The second group was comprised Georgia, the second national team of Kazakhstan, Romania and Azerbaijan.
Georgia won all their three matches in the group stage and were considered favourites against Armenia in the semi-final. The hosts strengthened this status with a 1-0 win. The only goal was scored at the end of the match. Unfortunately, the leader of the Georgian national team, Davit Frangishvili, got injured in this match, and this seriously weakened the team. The regulation time of the final ended without a goal. Gegi Kikabidze, the goalkeeper of the Georgian national team, was the star of the show. But in the penalty shootout the goalkeeper of Kazakhstan saved three penalties to help the visitors become champions.
Mikheil Abaishvili, President of the Association of Sports Journalists of Georgia, said: "The tournament was held at a very high level. I would like to thank the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth of Georgia, our partners. The tournament has become a traditional one, and I would like to thank all of this year's participants for coming. Everyone enjoys visiting Georgia and spending a few days here."
