SYDNEY, November 5, 2022 - Afghanistan won the toss in their final match against the host team Australia on Friday, November 4th in the T20 World Cup in Australia and choose to bat first, It was important for Australia to win this match, and they wanted to beat Afghanistan by a big margin to finish in the top two teams of this group.
But due to the good bowling of Afghanistan's bowlers Naveen Ul Haq, Rashid Khan, and Fazal-Haq-Farooqi, Australia could not score more runs and scored 168 runs in 20 overs with the loss of 8 wickets. Glenn Maxwell scored 54* the most runs from the Australian side.
Afghanistan batsmen started the game well in pursuit of Australia's target of 169 and it seemed that Afghanistan will win this match very easily. But after Rahmanullah Garbz and Gulbuddin Naib were out, the important players of Afghanistan, Captain Mohammad Nabi, Najib Zadran, and Ibrahim Zadran, were out one after the other and Afghanistan lost the match.
In the last overs of the match, the Afghan player Rashid Khan tried to play fast and reach the target in the remaining balls, but he could not get the last 4 runs. Rashid Khan scored 48* off 23 balls. Australian player Glenn Maxwell was declared the man of the match based on 54* runs.
Immediately after this defeat, the captain of the Afghanistan national cricket team, Mohammad Nabi, stated on his Facebook page that he is resigning from the captaincy of the Afghanistan national team, and if the team needs him, he will continue to play as a player.
Mohammad Nabi stated: “From the last year, our team preparation was not to a level that a captain would want it or needed for a big tournament. Moreover, in some of the last tours the team management, selection committee and I were not on the same page which had implications on the team balance.”
He added: “Therefore, with due respect, effective immediately I announce to STEP DOWN as a CAPTAIN & will continue to play for my country when the management & team need me.“
