ANPS to host 60 Senegalese sports journalists in Qatar for World Cup coverage

ANPS president Abdoulaye Thiam

DAKAR, November 15, 2022 - The participation of the Senegalese national football team in the Qatar 2022 World Cup means a massive movement for the country's sports press. Indeed, on behalf of the Senegalese media, 60 journalists and photographers will go to Qatar to cover the event.
And in order to ensure a good journey and better working conditions on Qatari soil, the national sports press association of Senegal, ANPS, has made a great mobilization.
“The ANPS has found an accommodation site in Al Bayya next to Al Thummama and Khalifa stadiums where all sports journalists and photographers from Senegal will be housed at half price,” ANPS president Abdoulaye Thiam announced. The association will cover 50% of the accommodation cost.
ANPS has also planned a mass transportation system that will transfer the media delegates from the airport to their place of residence in Al Bayya. In addition, “ANPS will also provide a 60-seater bus for each match”, according to Thiam.
However, that is not all. Health care is also being prioritized with the provision of a doctor for the Senegalese journalists. The consultation fees will be entirely covered by the ANPS, according to its president.
All these efforts represent a great investment that the association has made from its own resources. "This association was founded in 1970 by our seniors. It benefits from credibility forged by its seriousness and the professionalism of the men and women who compose it,” Thiam explained.
“We know that covering the World Cup is a great moment for a journalist. But in the current context and with the high standard of living in the host country, significant support from the association, to ensure that our members have the best conditions, was necessary,” Abdoulaye said.
With the support of partners, the ANPS has organised training sessions in English for reporters who are going to the World Cup. “English is an essential language in the job we do. However, in a French-speaking country like ours, it can be a challenge for many journalists. To enable our colleagues to be at the same level of understanding as the others, we wanted to equip them as well as possible.”
In Qatar, the Senegalese press will have plenty of material. "We have set up a press house where we will welcome state and sports authorities. From the coach Aliou Cissé to the President of the federation Me Senghor through former footballers, without forgetting members of the Supreme Committee Qatar 2022 and also colleagues of the world such as the AIPS president Gianni Merlo.
The ANPS wants to ensure that members of the Senegalese sports press have a memorable experience covering the World Cup in Qatar.
