PARAMARIBO, December 29, 2022 - Bodybuilder Eddy Wilson and volleyball player Cabriëlla Bouterse were named Male Athlete of the Year and and Female Athlete of the Year respectively in Suriname by the Association of Sportsjournalists in Suriname (VSJS). The VSJS Sports Awards were handed out on Friday December 23rd in Owru Cul.
Wilson, who wasn’t present – he is currently in the Netherlands after a guest appearance in Abu Dhabi – edged out track cyclist Jaïr Tjon En Fa and basketball player Gavin Kensmil. The winner was runner-up in the category +95 kilogram at the first IFBB Mr & Mrs World Championship in November in the United Arab Emirates. In July he won the Roger Boyce Elite Pro Classic in Barbados.
Bouterse was competing for the title with female athletes as Tachana Dalger (track cycling) and Alicia Grootfaam (track and field). In her last year at the Ave Maria University in the United States she received a Honorable Mention All-American. She was also chosen in the First Team All-Sun Conference and First Team All-Southeast Region. One of the most feared hitters in the conference and region closed her 2,5 years at AMU when she received her bachelor degree in Political Economic and Government on December 9 2022.
The seventeen year old male volleyball player Meson Anakaba (Scholenvolleybalvereniging) went home with the Junior Male Athlete of the Year 2022. With the U19 national team he won the Cazova Youth and Junior Championship in Trinidad and Tobago. Anakaba was named the Most Valuable Player and got awards as the best opposite and the best scorer.
Female basketball player Chiniqua Pengel of Yellow Birds, also seventeen, was choses as the Junior Female Athlete of the Year 2022. She was top scorer of the U19 Division (340 points) and the Women’s League (342 points). Pengel was also named Most Valuable Player of the women’s playoffs in which she helped her team Yellow Birds to the league title without a single loss. During the Inter-Guiane Goodwill Games she led the girls team of Suriname to the title. Pengel was named MVP of the competition between Suriname, Guyana and French Guiana.
The VSJS Sports Awards 2022 were the first since 2019. In 2020 and 2021 the VSJS didn’t have her gala because of the Covid-19 outbreak in the country which brought the sports almost to a complete stop. This year the VSJS choose nine sports – in the previous editions there was a maximum of 18 sports – because not all of the leagues have started or had sufficient and meaningful games.
Mijensa Rensch, Donovan Wisse and Zachari Zeegelaar received special awards. Rensch became the first female assistant referee of Suriname who was chosen for a FIFA World Cup. She was assistant at the World Cups Under 20 and Under 17 this year. Wisse became Glory Kickboxing champion and also defended his belt this year. Just like Rensch Zeegelaar became Surinames first male assistant referee in a World Cup. During the Fifa World Cup 2022 in Qatar he had twee games in the group phase.
The Lifetime Achievement Award 2022 was awarded to Wilfred Burgos. The allrounder is still active in the sport that brought him the most attention, karate. But the sport in which he achieved the biggest results was track and field. Burgos also participated in gymnastics, boxing, taekwondo and wrestling. In August he celebrated his 75th Birthday and in November he received his 9th dan. Burgos plans to keep on running his Kyokushinkai Karate Instituut Wilfred Burgos “as long as the Man above gives me strength”.
