LAUSANNE, February 10, 2023 – The world lost one of its biggest sporting icons on December 29, 2022. Pelé, one of the greatest footballers of all time, widely hailed as the King of Football, has died at the age of 82, but his unparalled legacy surely lives on. In the latest issue of the AIPS Magazine, AIPS pays tribute to the man who charmed the world with a ball at his feet and revolutionised the beautiful game. Pelé’s majestic portrait adorns the cover of the IV/22 issue, which is now online and available for download. Below are some of the highlights.
PELÉ IS ETERNAL Words are not enough to describe the legend Pelé and his incomparable genius, our Brazilian young reporter, Victor Pereira, explains in an emotional tribute to his country’s idol. Even though he was born around two decades after Pelé retired from mesmerising football lovers with his extraordinary skills, Pereira expresses how much Edson Arantes do Nascimento means to Brazil. AIPS EC Member, Vicente Dattoli further eulogises the impact of “the boy who unintentionally becoame king” on the country and beyond.
IRANIAN JOURNALISTS IN JAIL In his editorial, AIPS President Merlo stresses that sports needs to do more for press freedom and draws attention to the plight of our Iranian colleagues who are in jail in their country, including Niloofar Hamedi, the photo reporter who broke the news of the custodial death of Mahsa Amini in September. “The world of sports has to do something strong to oppose this unacceptable situation.” Merlo also condemns the disrespectful behaviour of Argentina players in Doha, after they sang a song insulting sports journalists while celebrating their World Cup title win at the mixed zone of the Lusail Stadium.
JOURNALISTS ON THE PODIUM Eighty-two veteran football journalists were honoured at the first-ever AIPS Journalists on the Podium to be staged at a FIFA World Cup. Organised in collaboration with the world football governing body, FIFA, the event took place on November 29, 2022, at the Main Media Centre of Qatar 2022 in Doha, with Brazil football icon, Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima, commonly known as "Il Fenomeno", presenting world cup replica trophies to journalists who have covered eight or more World Cups. Argentine legend Enrique Macaya Márquez holds the record of 17 World Cup appearances, followed closely by German Hartmut Scherzer (16 World Cups) and Uruguayan Jorge Toto Da Silveira (15).
AIPS MOURNS Few days after becoming the youngest honoree at the Journalists of the Podium, illustrious US journalist Grant Wahl, who was covering his eighth World Cup in Qatar, passed away on December 10, 2022, at the age of 49. Then a day later another sad news hit the sports media world that Qatari photojournalist Khalid al-Misslam “passed away suddenly” at the age of 44. AIPS Mentor Martin Mazur, who was in Doha for the World Cup, writes about these shocking deaths and the whole media industry offered respects to their families and friends.
MAGICAL NIGHT FOR ARGENTINA AIPS Mentor Martin Mazur shares his emotions from watching his country lift their third World Cup title at the Lusail Stadium in Doha. “After Montiel’s penalty I screamed too much, I almost fainted, the stadium was trembling,” he explains in an interview. He also writes a first-person piece titled “The night we cried together”, expressing what the World Cup title meant for Lionel Messi and Argentina.
Many more stories can be found inside the AIPS Magazine thanks to contributions from our National Associations, Delegates and Continental Sections.
