ATHENS, February 26, 2023 - The annual Sports Journalism Awards of the Greek Sport Journalism Association (PSAT) were presented at a successful ceremony at the amphitheatre of the Hellenic Olympic Committee headquarters on the 21st of February 2023.
The ceremony began with a moment of silence to pay respect for the victims of the heartbreaking earthquake in Turkey and Syria that killed thousands.
The president of PSAT, Yannis Theodorakopoulos started his speech by expressing the solidarity of the Greek sport journalists with the colleagues of Turkey and Syria and then he said: “The Sports Journalism Awards were established 25 years ago to celebrate excellence among the country's sports writers, photographers and broadcasters, working for newspapers, as well as sports magazines, tv or radio stations and across all digital formats and it’s important to point out that they are the only journalism awards in Greece given by an association."
He continued by saying that although the awards concern the sports journalism, there are some for other areas of journalism like the one awarded this year to six female war correspondents in Ukraine, who were honoured for their exceptional work. He then spoke about the colleague, Georgia Papadopoulou, who passed away prematurely after battling with leukemia: "Today, we send an important message in order for the number of people who become bone marrow donors increase.” He also spoke about the problems the sports journalists face (such as unemployment or low wages) declaring the will of PSAT to minimize them. “But we are proud of the bright side of our job,” he said, “the bright side that you are representing through your work. Your work contributes to the development of sports, informs the people immediately and accurately and most importantly imparts the high values of Athletics. The young people learn through sports how to overcome the difficulties and stand up to fight again”. He added that the sports journalist must work harder in order to speak or write more about sports that aren’t so popular and not only remember the athletes only when they win a medal. He added that there are awards for colleagues who wrote books during 2022 as well as for the children of colleagues who entered through exams the universities of Greece. He completed his speech thanking the political, sport and academic officials who support the Greek Sports Journalism Awards and attend the Award’s ceremony.
