LAUSANNE, May 4, 2023 - The first issue of the AIPS Magazine for 2023 is now available for download on our website. It features significant updates from the new Executive Committees of AIPS and its Continental Sections; highlights the invaluable experiences of AIPS Young Reporter; puts a spotlight on the AIPS Sport Media Awards 2022 finalists; touches on issues such as war, press freedom and the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports; and looks ahead to the 85th AIPS Congress in Seoul. On the cover of this edition is our staff member Chibuogwu Nnadiegbulam who was recognised on International Women’s Day 2023 by a notable Nigerian sports radio station, Brila FM.
AIPS PRESIDENT’S EDITORIAL In his editorial, AIPS President, Gianni Merlo, writes about the importance of the 85th AIPS Congress in Seoul, which would feature a timely debate on Artificial Intelligence and its impact on the sports journalism profession. He also points out the difficulties sports in particular and the world at large are currently facing and insists that "sports must defend human rights and fight for freedom of expression without becoming a hostage to politics.”Then he explains the hope for the future that lies in the AIPS Sport Media Awards, where “the level of participation is growing not only in number, but also in quality”.
TRANSGENDER DEBATE World Athletics sparked renewed debate over the participation of transgender athletes in women sports when the global governing body in March voted to ban trans women who have gone through male puberty from participating in its women’s events. This stance, which according to the President Sebastian Coe was guided by the “need to protect the female category” has drawn both praise and criticism.
IMPORTANT MEETINGS Following the elections at the last AIPS Congress in Rome, the new AIPS Executive Committee held its first in-person meeting in February in Santa Susanna, Spain. The notable decisions made during this four-day intense meeting are highlighted in the magazine alongside the exciting initiatives announced by the newly-elected Executive Committees of the continental sections. Senegal hosted the AIPS Africa Congress in February where Nigerian Mitchell Obi’s decade-long as president came to an end and Sengalese Abdoulaye Thiam took up the mantle of leadership.
AIPS AWARDS The names of all the AIPS Sport Media Awards 2022 finalists have been published in this issue of the magazine as they await the night of May 9th that will be full of emotions when the winners will be announced. The fifth edition of the Awards once again proved that sports journalists are constantly raising the bar and showcasing excellence across every form of media amid prevalent challenges. There were 1830 submissions in the 2022 edition of the Awards.
AIPS YRP Two AIPS Young Reporters Programmes took place in January 2023; one in collaboration with FISU at the FISU Winter World University Games in Lake Placid, USA, and another one in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia with the participation of seven promising Saudi female sports journalists. The participants share their must-read experiences in the latest magazine.
