SEOUL, May 10, 2023 - A combination of beautiful images of fabulous buildings, great architecture of traditional and meaningful places, a flight over lush waterways and forests, spectacular and wonderful stadiums from the 10 cities around Germany (Berlin, Cologne, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Leipzig, Munich, Stuttgart). That was the content of the video presented by Thomas Giordano to the AIPS Congress in Seoul. The Head of Media Operations at UEFA was the guest of the AIPS Congress in Seoul to give an idea of what level the preparations for the UEFA Euro 2024 preparation is at. Ten venues from the above mentioned cities will be hosting the matches from June 14 to July 14 with the opening match to take place in Munich. “We have very good stadiums, huge capacities and the project will be fantastic,” Thomas Giordano said.
SUSTAINABLE From what has been said and shown, apparently, Germany is ready to host world football family for a very sustainable event. “We are trying to make the event very sustainable. We want to be kind of natural and we also group venues to make sure that the teams do not travel extremely during the group games. We have the southern part, the central part and the northern part, and team will play in those regions so that the teams and their supporters can stay close during the group stages,” Giordano said.
This strategy will also save supporters from some transportation cost as it prevent them from travelling too much. The other interesting part highlighted by the Head of Media and PR at FIFA is the possibility of duplicating the experience of 2006 World Cup regarding Fan Zones. “We are working closely with the organising committee and the German authorities to again have Fan Zones around the stadiums so that people who don’t have tickets can participate and enjoy the parties and watch the game in the city centres,” Thomas said.
The Euro 2024 in terms of audience will also be top. “It represents 45 editions of super bowl in term of audience or six edition of formula 1. Figures are impressive and it means that the competition will be watched all over the world,” Giordano started.
The public can expect to get a ticket in a couple of month. “This October, we will start the ticket sales for the general public in particular.” As for media, their accreditation process will be starting in January 2024.
YOUNG REPORTER PROGRAMMES Addressing the collaboration with AIPS, Thomas Giordano acknowledged the importance of the young reporters programme which both organisations have collaborated for five times. “It was beneficial not for only the young reporters, but also for us as it shows what UEFA is doing behind the scenes. I’m pleased to announce that we will have the sixth one this year in Malta with 12 young reporters from Europe to experience the European Championship from the inside, to be there with mentors who are experienced journalists who can give them tips on how to cover the event. We are please for that and we are looking forward to it,” he added.
Giordano also announced that the young reporters who won the AIPS award this year will be invited to the UEFA Nations League finals in the Netherlands in June to report as journalists. The same opportunity was offered to two others young reporters who won the awards in 2020 but who due to the COVID19 pandemic were not able to make it. According to Giordano, those two will be offered the chance to attend the final of UEFA Champions league Final in Istanbul.
