Afghan Jiu-Jitsu Champion Arezo Ahmadi arrested in Pakistan after her victorious gold medal win in Karachi

ISLAMABAD, June 7, 2023 - Afghan Jiu-Jitsu champion Arezo Ahmadi was arrested in Islamabad, Pakistan after winning a gold medal in a recent tournament held in Karachi, Pakistan. Pakistani police apprehended Ahmadi on Tuesday, despite her recent victory in the Jiu-Jitsu contest on Sunday, June 4. Representing Afghanistan at the 7th International Jiu-Jitsu Checkmate Competition, Ahmadi outperformed her opponents and claimed the gold medal.
The event featured Jiu-Jitsu athletes from the United States, Canada, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Ahmadi's exceptional skills allowed her to dominate her three competitors and secure the top spot on the podium. Following her triumph, Ahmadi, in possession of a UNHCR immigration card, was detained by Pakistani police on Tuesday, June 6, during her return from Karachi to Islamabad.
NO CHARGES PRESSED Ahmadi expressed her message to the media, revealing that she had been held in police custody for over five hours without any explanation. Alongside Ahmadi, her friends were also detained by the Islamabad police at the same time.
Ahmadi's friend and women's rights activist, Zohra Wahidi Akhtari, has confirmed that there has been no contact with her friend since her arrest. Furthermore, she is unaware of the location where the police have taken her.
It is worth noting that in recent days, Pakistani police in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and other major cities have made a campaign to detain Afghan refugees for lacking valid visas and stay permits.
