"Mental and physical health is one, although most people think they are two parts of the personality. Since both parts are connected, they influence each other", explained, head of the Research Committee of Alumni Club at German Sport University Köln.
Thanks to his ideas and work, Božo became part of the Special Olympics as a sports psychologist, causing a positive impact on young athletes.
"I was with the national team from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and two boys left a great impression on me. One of them is Hasan, a guy, full of kindness. When we were shaking hands, he threw a high five to me, and then I saw him nudge his friend with his elbow and say: 'Look, Božo is my friend!'. That little gesture warmed up my heart.“
It's hard to be just professional at events like the SO because each of the 6,000 athletes has a different story.
GAMES NON-JUST FOR ATHLETES SO has many coaches, who, in addition to training athletes and teaching them sports, also monitor their development at other levels.
"It's very difficult and demanding to be a coach at SO, and the most important thing in a team is good communication because in some countries children with and without difficulties are training together. Therefore communication is key," said Vukojević.
SO stands for unity, but it also shows the differences between the countries.
"The preparation and education of the coaches depend on the delegations, but those coaches must have specific skills. Usually, they have one family member with disabilities, and that gives them the ability to properly communicate with the rest of the group".
ABILITIES NOT DISABILITIES Spomenko is the other athlete who made a strong impression on Božo. It happened when the young athlete shared his desire to satisfy his will to improve. This happened only because Spomenko was able to see the differences between Germany and his own Country. If conditions for people with intellectual disability in Germany, were the same in Bosnia, he would feel much more involved in his society.
“A lot of people with intellectual disabilities can work and – contrary to what most people believe – they can occupy very high positions in society, for sure they are entitled to be ambitious. Spomenko proves that he belongs to that category because he has competence for it” concluded Vujokević.
Thanks to the SO Games, Spomenko now has realized that. Focusing on the abilities, instead of on the disabilities, is what the rest of the world should be focusing on first.
