13th African Games LOC and Sports Writers Association of Ghana host media seminar: experience, expectations and plans

ACCRA, February 23, 2024 – The Local Organising Committee of the 13th African Games in collaboration with the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) organised a media seminar on Thursday, February 22, ahead of the continental multi-sport event scheduled to take place from March 8-23 in Ghana.
The seminar, which was held at the Sunlodge Hotel and attended by representatives from media outlets and broadcasting networks, discussed the expectations for the Games and delved into various aspects crucial for the effective media coverage of the event.
SPEAKERS Ghana’s Minister of Youth and Sports Mustapha Ussif as well as the Executive Chairman of the LOC, Dr. Kwaku Ofosu Asare addressed the media. Other speakers included the President of SWAG - Kwabena Yeboah, George Lomotey – the Deputy Director TV of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).
MEDIA OPERATIONS Attendees gained comprehensive insights into the logistics involved in ensuring smooth media operations for the duration of the Games. The seminar also shed light on the specifics of media and broadcast rights concerning the African Games and offered firsthand accounts of the African Games experience from distinguished guests. Another highlight of the seminar was a deep dive into how major global sporting events are covered and the lessons they offer.
ETHICS Other presenters were Reks Brobby COO for Accra 2023, Karl Tufour Communications Director of Ghana Athletics, Dan Kweku Yeboah, Eva Okyere, Rosalind Amoh and Gary Al-Smith all members of the Media Sub Committee.
Al-Smith warned that accredited media professionals are barred from wearing national team jerseys to the media gallery during the Games. He said: “Journalists who wish to wear national team Jerseys can join the Supporters Club, and avoid coming to the media gallery. This is to ensure that everyone in the media gallery are focused on the professional ethics of the job.”
The African Games will be taking place in Ghana for the first time with most of the competitions set to be held in the capital, Accra.
