KAMPALA, May 28, 2024 - In a world where dreams often seem out of reach for the less fortunate, the Aliguma Foundation stands as a beacon of hope. In 2019, this dedicated organization transformed the life of Gloria Nicole Apio, a young girl from the Acholi Quarters slums, giving her the chance to pursue her dream of becoming a sports journalist. Travelling from the slums to Italy, Apio was mentored by renowned sports journalists from AIPS Media. Today, she thrives as a sports journalist with NBS Sport in Uganda, inspiring countless others with her story of resilience and determination.
TRANSFORMATIVE JOURNEY Continuing its mission of hope, the foundation, led by passionate CEO and Founder Ritah Aliguma, has embarked on another transformative journey. A seven-person team travelled to Europe aboard Turkish Airlines. Among the travellers were James Odongkara, a 13-year-old football prodigy, and Janet Zenah Arach, an 18-year-old who once toiled in a stone quarry to support her family. Accompanying them is local council councillor Ismail Mukoiko, symbolizing the community's pride.
COMMITMENT TO INCLUSIVITY This journey is made even more special by the inclusion of 10-year-old Christian Mirembe, a boy with special needs, and 14-year-old Don Mirembe, both from Masindi. Their participation underscores the foundation's commitment to inclusivity and support for all children, regardless of their challenges.
Doreen Namuyinga, the foundation administrator, and Ritah Aliguma will engage with the UEFA Foundation for Children board members, sharing stories and forging connections to further their mission.
EUROPA CONFERENCE LEAGUE FINAL The trip will culminate in attending the high-profile Europa Conference League final between Olympiakos and Fiorentina at the OPAP Arena in Greece on May 29, 2024. Before the game, they will meet UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin.
This story is about dreams realised, lives transformed, and the belief that hope can rise from even the most challenging circumstances. Through the Aliguma Foundation, these youngsters are given a chance to shine, dream, and believe in a brighter future.
