KAMPALA, June 3, 2024 - Middleweight pugilist Isaac "Zebra" Ssenyange Jr. achieved a decisive 5-0 victory over Abas Sseguya in a national title ten-round fight during the grand reopening of the fully renovated Hamz Stadium (War Memorial Stadium, Nakivubo). The event, which drew a large crowd, took place on Saturday night, June 1, 2024.
Ssenyange Jr. extended his undefeated streak in professional boxing to four wins, including three knockouts (KOs). Since transitioning to the professional ranks last year, he has maintained a perfect record. His professional debut occurred last year against Tarimo Alibaba at Lugogo Hockey Grounds.
Conversely, Abas Sseguya suffered his second loss in six professional fights, having won four and lost two. His first defeat was against the formidable Farahat Manirola at Lugogo.
In another match on the same day, Zahara Nandawula and Flavia Babirye faced off, with Nandawula securing a unanimous 5-0 victory.
The main kickboxing fight between Golola and Ssemata sparked controversy. Despite the initial declaration of Ssemata as the winner, the referee later raised both fighters' hands, nullifying the first decision. This bout marked the third meeting between the kickboxing giants. Ssemata won their first encounter on points in 2018, while Golola triumphed in their 2019 rematch with a third-round knockout at Freedom City, Namasuba.
The event also featured two football matches. In the first, Uganda Cup winners Kitara FC lost 3-0 to URA FC, with Joseph Ssemujju scoring once and Ivan Ahimbisibwe netting a brace for the tax collectors. In the second and official opening match, league champions SC Villa defeated their longtime rivals Express FC 1-0, with Andrew Otim scoring the only goal under the stadium's new floodlights.
