TBILISI, June 25, 2024 - Georgia is getting ready for the Olympic qualification tournament in Latvia. The team still has some holes to fill and some tests to be played. One of those games was held in Trento.
Here comes Italy.
Under the new head coach Aleksandar Dzikic, Georgia was facing a tough opponent. Italy is always resilient, sharp and deep. Italy can always upp the game when needed and Georgia has always had some great battles versus this Eurogiant.
Italy was better, 79:68. Despite losing the first quarter 17:23, and falling behind early 0:8, Italy climbed back and took the lead in the second quarter. And, later some costly turnovers just killed Georgia.
Goga Bitadze was dominating early, but he could not hold his own. He got into a foul trouble and finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds, but could have got a lot more. Easy.
Italy was scoring less from the perimeter, but Georgia had 21 turnovers and that was it.
Tornike Shengelia was the Man for Georgia. Again, as always. 17 points, 7 boards, some cute dimes and great defense was there, but that was not enough to overcome Italy with its deep attack.
Toko was standing tall, but Georgia still lost.
We are getting close to that Latvian cruise. And Toko will be the man. Has to be. Again.
