Pakistan’s football team faces financial crisis and withdraws from SAFF Championship due to lack of funds

Pakistan finished 2nd in the 2023 SAFF U19 Championship

ISLAMABAD, July 12, 2024 - Pakistan's football fraternity is reeling under a severe financial crunch, forcing the national team to pull out of the prestigious SAFF U20 Football Championship. The cash strapped Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) had pinned its hopes on FIFA funding but the failure to secure the necessary funds has dealt a devastating blow to the team's participation in the tournament.
Despite generating a substantial income of over one crore (approximately $67000) from hosting FIFA qualifiers, the PFF is struggling to meet the financial requirements for the SAFF Championship. The estimated cost for participating in each event is around $20,000 (approximately 2 lakh dollars).
The PFF's reliance on FIFA funding has left the team vulnerable and the failure to secure sponsorship deals has exacerbated the financial crisis. The football community is urging the PFF to explore alternative revenue streams and secure sponsors to support the team's participation in international events.
The withdrawal from the SAFF Championship is a significant setback for Pakistan's young footballers who were eager to showcase their skills on the international stage. The financial crisis has raised concerns about the team's participation in upcoming tournaments including the SAFF U-17 and Women's championships.
