Georgia stuns Japan in a test clash

Georgia won the scorching battle

TBILISI, July 15, 2024 - After beating Fiji, Georgian National rugby team flew away to Japan to face another tier 1 team.
Sendai was waiting for the clash.
25:23, Georgia came out victorious in the seventh meeting between the rivals. We beat Top Asian team for the second time in 10 years. And, for the first time – in Japan.
Georgia improved under the leadership of Richard Cockerill. The British head coach gives our NT some needed variety and never takes prisoners, never backs up. Georgia managed to beat the rugby elite twice in 2022 with Levan Maisashvili at the helm of head coach: versus Italy (in Batumi) and facing Wales in Cardiff.
For Cockerill, this was the first time of winning in clutch against some elite opponent.
Georgia did not have some needed talent, as several key players were missing during the summer tests. This team is quite young, but compensates the lack of experience with grit and passion. Georgia had some debutants on 23-man roster and with the exception of Sandro Todua, none of our players were over 28.
We faced Japan for the last time 6 years ago and the overall balance was depressing: only 1 win and 5 tough losses. Japan joined the elite few years ago and since then, we did not have a chance to face them.
Until now. All in all, Georgia beat the hosts 25:23 and is leaving Sendai as winner.
Now we move on to Australia and will face the Kangaroos on July 20th.
