GAZA STRIP, July 15, 2024 – The Khan Yunis Youth Football Club is mourning the loss of their star goalkeeper, Shadi Abu Al-Arraj, who was killed on Saturday during Al-Mawasi massacre committed by the Israeli army in Southern Gaza Strip. The massacre, took the lives of over 90 Palestinians and left over 300 injured, including women and children.
UN SECURITY RESOLUTION The attack involved Israeli warplanes bombing tents sheltering displaced Palestinians in Al-Mawasi, according to preliminary statistics from the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza. Despite UN Security Council resolutions calling for an immediate ceasefire and orders from the International Court of Justice to prevent acts of genocide and improve Gaza's miserable humanitarian situation, these attacks continue unabated.
EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT Mustafa Siam, Secretary General of the Palestinian Sports Media Federation, currently displaced with his family in a tent in awful living conditions, shared with AIPS: "Since October 7, Israel has killed more than 300 Palestinian athletes. Over 90% of sports facilities in southern Palestinian governorates have been destroyed or vandalized since the beginning of Israeli war on Gaza Strip."
Siam, who also serves as Head of Communications at the Palestinian Football Association, added, “Abu Al-Arraj’s death is part of Israel’s systematic targeting of the Palestinian sports community. This includes assassinating or arresting athletes, restricting their movement, and destroying sports infrastructure.”
He also mentioned that the Palestinian Football Association has appealed to international and continental federations to take punitive measures against Israel for these crimes.
NOT THE FIRST MARTYR Ali Dahlan, spokesman for the Khan Yunis Youth Club, expressed grief over Abu Al-Arraj’s death, stating, “We have lost a distinguished player. His martyrdom adds to the list of Palestinian athletes who have been killed.” Dahlan highlighted that Abu Al-Arraj is not the first athlete the club has lost; previous victims include former technical director Captain Taha Kallab and the club’s captain Muhammad Barakat.
CONDEMNATION Dahlan condemned the targeting of Palestinian athletes and the destruction of the club's facilities and headquarters by Israeli airstrikes, criticizing the international community and FIFA for their silence towards Israeli crimes.
ONGOING WAR Since October 7, 2023, the war on Gaza has caused immense loss and suffering. Nearly 127,000 Palestinian civilians have been killed or injured, most of them women and children. Over 10,000 people are missing, and the region is facing widespread destruction, disease spread and famine, which have claimed additional lives.
This ongoing violence underscores the urgent need for international intervention to protect civilians and uphold human rights.
