PARIS, August 6, 2024 - Italian photographer Giuliano Bevilacqua led the special list of sports journalists and photographers who were celebrated at the UNESCO headquarters on Tuesday (August 6) for having covered 10 or more summer and winter Olympic Games, including Paris 2024. The 83-year-old has covered 29 Games, followed by Hugo Steinegger with 28, while Laci Perenyi and Christine Brennan shared the bronze.
In what was an incredibly inspiring moment during the AIPS Centennial Celebration, these doyens of sports journalism who have each dedicated nothing less than 18 years to conveying the essence of the Olympic Games through words and images, received a set of AIPS pins, a copy of the beloved former AIPS lawyer François Carrard’s “By The Way” and other gifts from the 16 sports legends present.
THE SPORTS LEGENDS The world and Olympic champions, including Laureus World Sports Academy Members, who presented the awards to the journalists were: Antonio Rossi, Edwin Moses, Donna de Varona, Sean Fitzpatrick, Nawal El Moutawakel, Sebastian Coe, Nadia Comaneci, Kipchoge Keino, Daley Thompson, Tanni Grey-Thompson, Tegla Loroupe, Chris Hoy, Wu Jingyu, Ana Fidelia Quirot, Sergey Bubka and Nicol David.
JOURNALISTS ON THE PODIUM The first edition of the AIPS Journalists on the Podium took place at the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games with more than 100 Olympic journalists awarded Honav’s replica of the London 2012 Olympic torch. Since then this unique tradition has also left its mark at many other single-sport and multi-sport events. Paris 2024 marks the return of the Journalists on the Podium to the Olympics after a pandemic hiatus. It will be the fifth time the event will take place at the Olympics after London 2012 (Summer), Sochi 2014 (Winter), Rio 2016 (Summer) and Pyeongchang 2018 (Winter). The event was not held at Tokyo 2020, which took place in 2021, and Beijing 2022 due to the stringent COVID-19 restrictions in place at the time.
