VALLETTA, October 23, 2024 - As President and on behalf of the Executive Committee representing sport journalists associations around Europe we strongly condemn the removal of Oğuz Tongsir from the position of  President of the Turkish Sports Writers Association (TSYD).

The Turkish Sports Writers Association – TSYD has been always one of the leading sport media member of AIPS Europe.

Regrettably we note the appointment of a government-appointed trustee in his place which goes beyond our principles. Such a decision to remove Mr. Tongsir from his capacity of TSYD President is a direct intervention in freedom of media and the independence of sports.

Journalism, as a fundamental factor in society is to be kept free from any political pressure.

We demand the immediate reversal of the removal decision of Mr.Tongsir and to ensure an environment where sports journalists can work without restrictions.

AIPS Europe demands proper respect for the autonomy of the Turkish Sports Writers Association, - TSYD which remains an important factor in everyday democracy.
