Pakistan Sports Board suspends Weightlifting Federation amid corruption and doping scandal

ISLAMABAD, November 1, 2024 - The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has suspended the Pakistan Weightlifting Federation (PWF) due to grave irregularities, corrupt practices, and repeated anti-doping code violations.
The suspension follows an investigation conducted by a PSB appointed delegate undertaken under the directives of the Lahore High Court. The probe uncovered serious wrongdoing within the federation led by Hafiz Imran Butt.
To ensure continuity, an Interim Committee has been established to manage the federation's affairs. Furthermore all Provincial Sports Boards and government departments have been instructed to cease cooperation with the suspended federation.
"This swift action demonstrates our commitment to upholding the integrity of sports in Pakistan" stated a PSB spokesperson. "We will not tolerate corruption or doping and will take all necessary measures to protect the interests of our athletes and the sporting community."
The suspension is effective immediately and the PSB has vowed to take further action to address the issues plaguing the weightlifting federation.
