Kyrgyzstan dreams of getting to the World Cup and playing with Georgia

BISHKEK-TBILISI, November 1, 2024 - In Bishkek, I met with the first vice-president of the Kyrgyz Football Union (KFU), Nurdin Bukuev. He is a well-known football figure not only in Kyrgyzstan, but also in Asian and world football. Since 2006, Nurdin has been a FIFA referee, he has refereed matches at four different world championships of mini-football, matches of several Asian championships, and has been awarded many titles and awards.
- What is the significance of the 1-0 victory of the Kyrgyzstan team in the 2026 World Cup qualifying match against the DPRK?
- The victory in the match against the experienced DPRK team became historic for Kyrgyzstan. After all, our national team is participating in the third round of the World Cup qualifying tournament for the first time. In the first matches of this round (against Iran, Uzbekistan and Qatar), the Kyrgyzstan team fought, showing a beautiful game, but there were no victories. And then came the day of our team's first victory in the third round of the World Cup qualifying tournament.
- Did you set the goal of qualifying for the World Cup for the national team? When will this be possible?
- There is no team in the world that would not dream of qualifying for the World Cup at least once. Kyrgyzstan is no exception - our team (the Kyrgyzstan team is ranked 106th in the FIFA member countries rankings – author’s note) also dreams of qualifying for the World Cup. It is difficult to say when we will achieve this goal, but we will gradually and consistently strive to qualify for the World Cup. Who knows, maybe when we qualify for the World Cup, our team’s rival in the group will be the Georgian team, it will be interesting.
And before Kyrgyzstan and Georgia qualify for the World Cup together, a friendly match of the national teams can be held. It will be a great pleasure for the Kyrgyzstan team to play a friendly match with the Georgian team, which in 2024 made it to the European Championship for the first time and showed a beautiful and successful game there, making its performance a sensation.
